Postpartum Fitness Tips

Postpartum fitness tips to get you through the “fourth trimester”

During the fourth trimester, your focus moves to your baby and recovering from nine months of pregnancy. Postpartum fitness helps you get back to your pre-pregnancy body, but also has many other benefits. You don’t have to hit the ground running; in fact, it’s better to be gentle with yourself, taking your time as you begin to exercise again. Our Austin and Dripping Springs OB/GYNs will help you through the challenges you may face during your postpartum recovery.

The benefits of exercising after pregnancy

Postpartum exercise can help you get back into shape, but there are other benefits, too.

  • Stress relief

  • Postpartum depression prevention

  • Energy boost

  • Better sleep

  • Stronger, more toned muscles, particularly the abs

When you participate in a postpartum fitness routine, it helps you feel more confident about yourself.

What you need to know about postpartum fitness while breastfeeding

It’s fine to exercise moderately while you are nursing. Follow these tips from our Austin and Dripping Springs OB/GYNs.

  • Pump before you exercise, so your breasts won’t be uncomfortably full.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or anything that makes you extra tired or stressed.

  • Wear a supportive bra that fits well.

How to get started

Every mom has a different experience in the fourth trimester. Talk to our team about your birth experience and recovery to determine the best time to begin exercising.

Start slowly and gently. Try walking or swimming at an easy pace. Do some pelvic tilts, Kegel exercises and gentle stretches. Your goal is to work up to 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Moderate exercise includes swimming, walking, jogging or any movement that increases your heart rate.

Postpartum fitness shouldn’t be a burden. Ask for help from family and friends when you need time to exercise. Take part in a mom and baby exercise class. Take your infant for a walk in the stroller or baby carrier. You will both benefit from the fresh air and sunshine.
