Protect your health with regular screening mammograms

Detecting breast cancer in the early stages is a vital part of annual wellness. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women who live in the United States. At your annual examination, our Austin and Dripping Springs OBGYNs usually perform a breast exam. We also suggest that you have a conversation about yearly screening mammograms if you are 40 or older.

We are proud to offer our patients 3D mammograms at our office at 9805 Brodie Lane in Austin. Being able to schedule your mammogram on the same day as your yearly exam makes preventive care even easier and more accessible.

The advantages of 3D mammography

There are two types of screening mammography—2D and 3D. At our Brodie Lane office, we provide 3D mammography. Here are the advantages that 3D offers over traditional 2D tests.

  • Reduces the number of callbacks to patients requiring further testing

  • Offers better breast cancer detection for patients who have dense breast tissue

  • Detects more breast cancer than 2D tests

When to have screening exams

Our Austin and Dripping Springs OBGYNs like to work with patients to determine when they should begin having screening mammograms and when they should stop having the test. It’s a patient-centered approach to breast cancer prevention and annual wellness. Here’s what to expect.

  • If you are 40 or older, our OBGYNs will offer you the option of a screening test. If you do not opt for mammography, we will urge you to start having screenings at age 50.

  • If you are a woman who has an average risk of developing breast cancer, our physicians will discuss whether you should have screenings every year or every two years.

  • If you are 75 or older, you can have a conversation about whether to continue having screening tests.

  • If you have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, our physicians develop a breast cancer prevention strategy that suits your needs.

Things to know about screening mammograms

When you talk to your scheduler, tell them if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have implants. Also let them know about any recent vaccinations. Here are a few tips for a better mammogram.

  • Don’t wear body powder, lotion, perfume, deodorant or antiperspirant.

  • Wear a skirt or pants, so you only need to remove your top for the test.

  • Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen before the screening exam to help with pain.

  • Don’t schedule your test during a time of the month when your breasts are very tender.

After the test, if your results are normal, you will receive a letter. If the radiologist sees something suspicious, our office will contact you to schedule diagnostic mammograms, ultrasound imaging or other tests.
