Tips for a Better Mammogram

It’s that time again! Read our tips for a better mammogram

When you are between 40 and 50 years old, our Austin and Dripping Springs OBGYNs will offer you screening mammograms. While nobody really looks forward to “squishing” day, preparing ahead of time with tips for a better mammogram can make it a more pleasant experience.

After age 50, our physicians strongly suggest that you have this preventive screening either every year or every two years until you are 75. After age 75, you can discuss whether you want to continue testing or not.

Find a facility that offers 3D screening mammograms

We are happy to offer 3D screening mammograms to our patients. This convenient new service is available at our 9805 Brodie Lane office in Austin.

What makes 3D mammograms preferable to standard 2D tests? The three-dimensional test combines multiple images to create a more complete, 3D picture of your breasts. This type of test is particularly valuable for women with dense breast tissue.

Women who have 3D screening receive fewer callbacks for additional testing, and the test detects more cancer than the 2D method. You can schedule your annual wellness exam with our Austin and Dripping Springs OBGYNs on the same day as your mammogram at 9805 Brodie Lane in Austin.

Sharing information helps the mammography team

One of our most important tips for a better mammogram is to share important information that could affect your mammogram. Here is what the team needs to know.

  • Let your scheduler know if you think you may be pregnant or are pregnant.

  • Tell the scheduler if you are breastfeeding.

  • Inform the scheduler about any recent vaccines.

  • Advise your radiation technologist if you have breast implants.

  • Let them know if you have noticed any changes in your breasts recently.

  • Tell them if you have risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer.

Follow our Austin and Dripping Springs OBGYNs’ tips for a better mammogram

Our physicians have some tips for a better mammogram that can help improve your experience.

  • Remember not to wear antiperspirant, deodorant or other scented items such as perfume, lotion or powder on the day of the test.

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever about an hour before your screening to help reduce any pain you may feel during the test.

  • Don’t schedule your test during the days before or during your period if you have tender breasts at that time.

  • Consider leaving your necklace at home because you will have to remove it for the test.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as you will be standing up during the test.

  • A two-piece outfit is your friend on mammogram day, since you have to remove your top and bra.
